Luxury, Hypocrisy, and the 4T: When Austerity Becomes a Slogan-Update

🎭 Introduction: The Austerity Narrative Cracks
Mexico’s political landscape is no stranger to contradictions, but recent events involving Ricardo Monreal, Claudia Sheinbaum, and members of the ruling party Morena (Movimiento Regeneración Nacional) have brought these contradictions into sharp focus. While the government continues to preach republican austerity, several prominent figures are caught living a far different reality — one that includes European vacations, luxury hotels, and high-end dining.
✈️ Monreal in Madrid: A Celebration or a Contradiction?
Senator Ricardo Monreal, a high-ranking Morena politician, was recently seen vacationing in Madrid with his wife. He insists the trip was:
- Privately funded
- In celebration of 40 years of marriage
- During a legislative recess
But the optics matter.
Photos published in a national paper suggest luxury accommodations. Monreal denies this, stating he and his wife only had breakfast at a luxury hotel. Regardless, the backlash was swift.
Claudia Sheinbaum, a key Morena figure and current presidential hopeful, gave a tepid response:
“El poder se ejerce con humildad. The people are the ones who evaluate us.”
Her discomfort was visible — a strained defense of a colleague she couldn’t really rein in.
🛑 Broken Promises: “We’re Not the Same”?
Morena's slogan, “No somos iguales” ("We’re not like them"), referred to a break from the previous ruling elites' habits of privilege. But recent actions contradict this:
- Decalogues promoting modesty were issued internally.
- Party leaders continue to be seen in high-end settings.
- The public is quick to notice — and criticize.
This isn’t just political hypocrisy; it’s a failure of internal discipline. As El Cuido notes, Sheinbaum’s lack of authority within her party is now on display.
🦞 Champagne in Capri: The Case of the Yunes
While Monreal was defending his Spanish retreat, other Morena figures — particularly the Yunes family, ex-PRI/PAN members turned Morena allies — were seen in Capri sipping €2,000 champagne and dining on lobster.
Capri, a luxury Mediterranean destination, is not where one expects to find the face of a political movement supposedly built on humility, equity, and anti-corruption.
Their defense? Silence.
Their support? Adán Augusto and Gerardo Fernández Noroña — both quick to deflect criticism and claim “these are human positions” that take a toll. As El Cuido sarcastically observes:
“Now they’re heroes? Give me a break.”
🚨 Scandals Behind the Scenes: Narcos, Nepotism, and Paraguay
The video also touches on Gerardo Bermúdez Arreola, nephew of Hernán Bermúdez Requena, a fugitive and close ally of Adán Augusto López (former governor of Tabasco).
Gerardo has been:
- Accused of producing fake documents
- Running illegal sports betting sites in Paraguay
- Tied to shell companies and monopolization
This isn't a political misstep — it’s alleged organized crime, and yet there’s little public outrage among Morena’s top brass.
🤫 Silence, Justifications, and the Price of Loyalty
The final portion of El Cuido’s video targets those who remain silent: citizens who excuse these abuses in exchange for continued government benefits or fear of being labeled traitors.
“They know the government is rotten, but stay quiet for the miserable stipends they get.”
It’s a hard-hitting criticism of a clientelist political culture that discourages scrutiny in exchange for subsidies.
🎤 Final Thoughts: Hypocrisy Wears a Suit
What do we take away from this?
- Austerity is branding, not behavior.
- The 4T (“Fourth Transformation”) claims moral high ground but falters in internal accountability.
- Public figures like Sheinbaum are increasingly powerless to correct their peers.
- Citizens — through social media and videos like Luis Berman YouTube channel — are the last watchdogs.
Morena may still claim it’s "not like the others," but the luxury vacations, scandals, and impunity suggest otherwise. The people are watching. And, as Luis Berman YouTube channel reminds us, they’re recording too.
